"Faces" in Agriculture

Randy Reed and his border collie Dollar win the belt buckle at the 2010 Nebraska State Fair Sheep Working Dog trials in Grand Island. The stock dog trials took place over two days during the fair with the first day dogs working cattle and the second day they were working sheep. Dog handlers from 8 states were present and the competition was extremely tough. Also congratulations to Bob Johnson, Tingley IA and John Holman Clay Center, NE for their succesfull week as well. Be sure to ask a dog handlers what the difference is between working stock and chasing them.

This week's commentary

Eggs have certainly been in the news these past few weeks, and how the latest egg recall unfolded has left some questioning if the behind-the-scenes objective of the Food & Drug Administration might really have been more about creating consumer fear in order to gain even more power and control of animal agriculture.

When one gets right down to it, some 1,300 more people than average reported getting sick from salmonella, but the source has not definitely been traced back to the consumption of eggs and, in fact, may never be.
FDA was investigating egg producers before this outbreak even began, and that certainly gives the impression that this is a witch hunt rather than a government agency implementing safety measures to protect consumers.

Upon hearing that an egg production farm in Iowa operated by Austin "Jack" DeCoster was at the heart of the investigation, my initial thought was: "Here's a company that has been a bad apple in the industry for quite some time."
I, like every other person who knows the company's track record, quickly made the assumption that it may be responsible for yet another issue. Today, I am telling you that may actually be an incorrect assumption.

After a week of studying the issue, I am convinced that FDA was in search of a situation exactly like this. It found the perfect culprit: one that the whole world would assume was guilty without hearing the rest of the story.
