Stalls can be in a sow's best interest
For the past six years, Dr. Samuel Baidoo and the staff at the University of Minnesota have been comparing and contrasting group housing systems and sow stalls. Baidoo recommends that if a move to group housing is necessary that the new system not be a totally stall-free. He believes a combined system provides the necessary protection during the critical times yet freedom to move around for 114 days of the cycle. Click here to view our video.

Providing assurances
Quality assurance is a key priority for Todd Tuls, owner of Double Dutch Dairy in Shelby, Neb. Tuls opened his dairy in 2000 and recently completed a extensive expansion bringing his herd to 3,600 cows, which are milked three times per day. Double Dutch Dairy adheres to strict procedures throughout various phases of production and relies on the latest in technology to protect the health and well-being of its cows.  Click here to view our video.

Producing more than just milk
At Vir-Clar Farm, Gary Boyke and his family are not only using their dairy herd to produce milk and other dairy products but they also are producing electricity for more than 300 surrounding homes. A digester located on the farm allows the Boykes to turn manure into biogas that is then used to generate electricity. They sell the electricity they produce back into the local grid and use the system to heat the water used on the farm. Click here to view our video.

Protecting the environment
Minnesota dairy producer Bill Rowekamp goes to great lengths to care for the environment and his cows, and as such Rowekamp Farm is a good example of the circle of life that today's farms provide. They raise corn and alfalfa on their land, harvest and feed those crops to their cows and then apply the manure from the cows back to the land to produce more crops the following year. In doing so they take care to follow proper application procedures that benefit their crop acres and protect surrounding land and waterways. Bill houses his cows on beach sand and provides them with the opportunity for a daily back massage. Click here to view our video.
